On July 19th - 20th members of the New Hampshire Society of the Sons of the American Revolution took part in the celebration of Watertown Treaty Days. The Treaty of Watertown was a treaty of alliance and friendship entered into and concluded by and between the Governors of the State of Massachusetts Bay, and the delegates of the St. John's and Mi'kmaq Tribes of Indians on July 19, 1776. It was the first treaty to recognize the United States as an independent nation. The original treaty was signed on July 19, 1776, 15 days after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The event included an 18th century military colonial encampment, militia drill, cannon firing and Native American Pow-Wow with ritual dancing, singing, and drumming. The event concluded with the reading of the original 1776 treaty that is understood to be the oldest standing treaty between the United States and a Native American population. Chief Frank Nevins tribal elder of the Mi'kmaq and leader of the First Nations/First Peoples entertained the NH Rangers and members of the John Stark Society, C.A.R. with interesting tales.

Hayes, Jr.. At 8:30 AM on Flag Day - Saturday, June 14, 2003 - members of the NHSSAR and the NH Society of the Children of the American Revolution gathered at the State House in Concord, NH for the SAR's traditional flag-raising. Each Flag Day, the Society raises the Bennington "76" flag (donated to the State by the NHSSAR) from the flagpole near the statue of General John Stark. In fact, NH Governor and Past NHSSAR President Sherman Adams arranged for the installation of this flagpole specifically for this purpose - a fact recognized in Governor Craig Benson's 2003 Flag Day Proclamation. The NHSSAR Color Guard, led by Compatriot Donald Hayes, paraded onto State House grounds to kick off this year's ceremony. The remainder of the Color Guard was composed of Compatriot Mark Preece, John Stark CAR members Alex and Connor Preece and Matthew Paquette of the Colonial Artillery Company. The Society extends special thanks to Mr. Paquette for his service in filling in for absent regular members of the SAR Color Guard. NHSSAR Historian and Past President Thomas Kehr led the ceremony at the State House and read Governor Benson's Flag Day Proclamation. Following the raising of the flag by Julia Kehr and Connor Preece of the CAR, both of whom were dressed in colonial regalia, Megan Rand, CAR State President led those assembled in the pledge of allegiance and delivered remarks. Those on hand for the event included the future Mrs. Paquette, the Kehr family, Compatriots Carleton and Bret Rand, their spouses Joyce and Judy and Compatriot Roger Floyd. A copy of Governor Benson's 2003 Flag Day Proclamation appears in this issue of the Minuteman.

Charlestown, MA - Members of the NHSSAR and John Stark Society, C.A.R. took part in the Bunker Hill Day ceremonies at the Bunker Hill Monument on Tuesday, June 17th . The ceremony marked the 228th Anniversary of the First Major Battle of the American Revolution. The ceremony began with an ecumenical service at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Charlestown. A processional led by the Middlesex County Volunteer's Colonial Fife & Drum paraded to the grounds of the Bunker Hill Monument. It has been a tradition since the lying of the monument's cornerstone that an orator recounts the day of June 17, 1775 and the sacrifices, valor of those men who fought to win independence. New Hampshire militia commanded by Colonel John Stark at the rail fence near the Mystic River repulsed the British infantry thrice. With the colonials running low on black powder, Stark marched off a measure and staked the ground to instruct his men not to fire until the enemy reaches the marked spot. The monument's first orator was New Hampshire's own Daniel Webster, a true son of the American Revolution his father Ebenezer Webster served as a colonel in the New Hampshire militia. The 2003 orator is Joyce Zakim, widow of civil rights leader Leonard P. Zakim for whom the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge is named. Alexander Preece, President of the John Stark Society, CAR placed a wreath at the New Hampshire Gate to honor the memory of the New Hampshire troops that fought so bravely on June 17, 1775. Members of the New England Contingent SAR placed wreaths at the US, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts Gates, and fired a three volley musket salute in tribute to the heroes of Bunker Hill.
